About

The Graphene NOWNANO CDT is a unique Centre for Doctoral Training run by specialist academics working alongside more than 300 graphene researchers across The University of Manchester, the home of graphene, in partnership with Lancaster University.

The CDT offers an opportunity to join a select group of PhD students working with some of the world’s leading scientists on 2D materials, including graphene – the 21st century’s wonder material.

Graphene has been dubbed a 'miracle material' due to the unique combination of superior electronic, mechanical, optical, chemical and biocompatible properties suitable for a large number of applications.

The potential of other 2D materials (eg. boron nitride, transition metal and gallium dichalcogenides) is clear and is leading to the development of ‘materials on demand’, i.e. materials with desired properties not readily available in nature.

Our four year PhD programme offers students the opportunity to develop the expert knowledge, skills and collaborative networking necessary to drive ground breaking research and innovation in the field of nanomaterials, whilst simultaneously contributing to the pioneering research at The University Manchester and Lancaster University.

Students enrolled on the Graphene NOWNANO PhD programme receive state-of-the-art training in fundamentals of graphene and 2D materials, their applications, and key techniques. The initial six month training period is followed by a three and a half year research project that students select from a broad range of cutting edge research projects in over 30 top rated research groups across multiple disciplines and university departments, complemented by direct engagement with a network of academic and industrial partners:

  • Experimental and Theoretical Physics
