As we do each year, the NOWNANO CDT held its annual student-led conference at Cranage Hall in Cheshire on 11-14 June 2013.
The conference was as successful as that of previous years, with involvement from external contributors (both industry and academic) representing Thermo Fisher Scientific, Imperial College London, University College London, Seagate Technologies and others, as well as featuring talks and poster presentations from NOWNANO PhD students and academics. The conference also featured several ice-breaker activities, photographs of which can be seen below.

In June 2012, NoWNANO held their annual student-led conference at Cranage Hall in Cheshire. The Summer School featured talks from external speakers, NoWNANO academics and current PhD students. Poster presentations were given by NoWNANO students and the Summer School also featured a day dedicated to business and enterprise, with workshops set up to provide NoWNANO students with an insight into the world of entrepreneurship. Just as importantly, the summer conference also provided students with an opportunity to network among their cohorts and academics. The conference was also opened up to research students on other PhD programmes in the field of Nanoscience within the University of Manchester and Lancaster University.
The conference was highly successful for the students, helping them to build potential research links, refining their presentation skills and exposing them to the world of business.
In 2011 a collaborative conference was held between the three Nanoscience Doctoral Training Centres in the UK - our own North West Nanoscience DTC, NanoDTC in Cambridge and BCFN (Nanomaterials) DTC in Bristol.
The conference was student-led and organised by those currently studying with the various DTCs, helping them to foster their communication, organisational and networking skills throughout the process. The event included contribution from industry speakers and academics from all three DTCs, group workshops, a panel discussion and plenty of team building activities!
Professor Dame Athene Donald who gave a talk at the conference has written a blog about the event.
The NOWNano CDT held its first annual residential meeting on 24th -25th June 2010 just outside Bolton, Lancashire. The School combines talks from external speakers and current PhD students working in the Nano field and includes poster presentations by the Nano students. It is also an opportunity for the Nano students to network and gain a wider understanding of the Nanoscience area in both academia and industry.
